WHAAAAAAT UPPPPP World Wide Web,

Sorry for taking a break from updating Skrilla Music Video!

I have LOADS of new Music Videos to share with you all… So lets get to it! Here is a new band out of NYC called “Fun.” These guys sound similar to the Arizona rock band the Format but with more EDGE, check them out! Here is their new hit song called “We Are Young” ft. Janelle Monáe. If you are creating a Graduation Playlist, you gotta throw this one on it!

Notable Mentions:

The Slow video editing mix’s GREAT with the change in beat of the song. Its almost like there are two different songs in this one song.

The HD shooting in this MV video adds a great polish in the end, COLOR COLOR COLOR!

The Score:

I will give the music video “Fun” an 8 out of 10 score. I felt it deserved an 8 because of how the directors connected the buzz of the song to this video. This song is about being young, free and alive and all over the place. That’s exactly what the end result was for this music video.

Check back next week and see what notable music video streaming makes it on Skrilla!

Sheryl Crow – Soak up The Sun

Give me a plane ticket to Hawaii ASAP! This video was directed by Wayne Isham.  The song Soak up the Sun was sung by artist Sheryl Crow. This is one of the videos I love to put on Skrilla. The audience doesn’t even have to like Sheryl Crow’s music to like this video. They are in paradise!

The Hawaian culture-

Everyone watching this video is thinking the exact same thing, I WANT TO BE WHERE THEY ARE! The combination between matching the music and the theme of the video are perfect. The way Isham stays with the beat of the song is something to take note of.

  • Through out the whole video Isham freezes a few of the video frames when it gets to a point of the song where it allows him to.  The video frame turns into the not-so-popular color yellow and comes across looking great. It’s like the video I was just watching is now an old worn out beach picture. Very cool!

THE V-DUB BUS! 🙂 Yes, the beach bum classic surfer automobile known as the Volts Wagon Bus  is in the video and did it ever look so good parked next to a beach? Note to self: Buy a V-DUB and road trip it to Cali ASAP!

SHOW ME A BEACH

Just you wait till the end.Yup, I am talking about the massive waves people have actually surfed and survived. Did you see that monster of a wave and the ant sized surfers riding them? If I was any of those surfers I would go to Vegas right away cause they have got to be lucky!

The underwater wave shots… Yes! This is what I live for. I love when directors in movies, shows and in music videos show those. It’s just  beautiful to see what a wave looks like from under water, enough said!

The Score

I am giving this one a 9 out of 10. Its not getting a 10 because the video takes a break from the beach and shows people cliff jumping. What the heck is that about? Show more of the white sand and picture perfect waves!

P.O.D. – Alive

WOW! The video “Alive”  was directed by Francis Lawrence. The band P.O.D. (Payable On Death) debuted this video in 2001. Where do I even begin to explain the brilliance of this video?

ACTION! ACTION! ACTION!

YES! This is what an action music video looks like, people! Right from the get go, Lawrence worked magic by putting the camera around a young teen kid getting into a car wreck and slows down every second of it. The slow-mow filming truly gave this music video its edge.

  • What an opening! The  impact between the public bus and the car is as unexpected as it gets and sets the tone for the type of music video this is going to be. By showing  the road collision within the first 10 seconds, the action captures the audience’s attention  immediately.
  • As if the outside shot of the crash isn’t entertaining enough, you get to also see action going on at the same time inside the car. When the car is rolling Lawrence shows all his stuff going absolutely everywhere. Awesome!

Additional Thrills-

I am just in awe on how Lawrence features the sports Skate Boarding and Surfing into the music video. Those two sports are high action which fit perfectly with the theme of this video. The sport sequences also give the video two more elements.

  1. An understanding of this kid’s life and his values. Which answers the main question of this video. Who is this kid?
  2. They keep the momentum of the video up! The director cannot continue to show the same car crash going on from different camera angles. That would get boring. By including skating and surfing the director takes the audience away from the crash and puts them in a less chaotic environment where they are able to catch their breath.

The Message:

When I watch this music video, it makes me have the urge to stop what I am doing, grab my long board and go outside for a skate shesh. This video makes the audience want to go outside and do anything just as long as its outside. Well done!

The Score

The music video Alive is getting a 10 out of 10. It’s just great! I enjoy how it sends a silent message to the audience to go out and live. Go outside and see what you can get into. You see this kid doing all this crazy stuff and you think to yourself, I would love to have some of that going on in my life.  I think the message is great because people do need to go outside more and get off the computers from work or school! You are not here forever you know…

A Summer Spring Break Classic

When I watch this all I can think is how far away is spring break? This 90’s summer hit music video was directed by the band themselves, crazy right?  The directors Marc Costanzo and Bradley Walsh, members of the band Len, signed a contract with Work Records in order to make this happen. One of the band’s demands was to be able to direct its own videos before they signed with there record company. This video is the result of the deal.

Fun Fact

The group used a $100,000 budget to make the video. They used that money to fly to Daytona Beach, Florida bringing along two dozen of their closest friends. At the time the area was crowded with people on their spring break vacations. Len also spent much of their budget on alcohol, buying so much that they broke their hotel’s elevator trying to ride it back to their room. Gotta love those Canadians!

This is so Skrilla:

HAPPINESS is everywhere in this video! Smiles are in every single frame of this video and that’s what makes it Skrilla!  Here’s an idea for a video, lets take your band and all your friends out on a spring break afternoon in Daytona, Florida and film the mischief they get into. Then we will take what we caught on camera back to the studio, edit it and call it a day! This is such a 90’s easy going lifestyle, gosh I miss that time!

Sequences

The editing of this video is what made it really pop. The way the band wanted to combine  video clips with the random activities from the afternoon along with clips of the band singing flows perfectly. Its a unique video that is not common to see. The bright colors of Daytona Beach and the culture of the 90’s relaxing Spring Break lifestyle became the main theme and honestly why shouldn’t it be? The spring break in the 90’s were a great place to be at the time!

The Score:

This one deserves a 8.5 out of 10. Lets remember, the band was in charge of the making of this video, there was no real script before shooting and the end product was this. I think that this kind of 90’s music video could only be made and have the success that it did in the 90’s. I can’t see how anyone could nowadays go out and shoot a video similar to this and have it be a classic like this one is. No way!

Additional links:

Len is sadly is going into the “One hit wonder” category.I could not find any additional links for Len because this was sadly their only hit. They still record music but have not put out any additional music videos besides this one.

Read My Mind – The Killers

MULTICULTURALISM

This video was obviously shot in Tokyo, Japan. What an idea for a video, go to a place where you know very little about the culture and people don’t really know you and film. The video features the band The Killers and was directed by Diane Martel.

Clips worth mentioning:

  1. The dance off! Did you see when Brandon Flowers (the lead singer) has a short dance off with the Elvis impersonator? Who would not want to do that? I would be all over a Japanese impersonator with my crazy moves and I think you would too, good times!
  2. Let’s ride bikes in Tokyo? Yes! Riding bikes on the streets of Tokyo sounds so uncommon and random to do which gives you every reason in the world on why they should do it. The scene turned out great! The director featured different types of bikes for each band member to ride, which made them an interesting site to see. Some of the locals’ facial reactions of confusion in the video are priceless.
  3. A fall leaves fight! Props to the the director for incorporating a vision of Japanese school children imitating the killers and then naturally ending up in a fight involving a playful battle of fall leaves. Everything was their enjoyment, multiculturalism and learning. That my friend is cool!
  4. The sleeping capsule! What a sobering truth of reality how space is so valuable in Tokyo. I did not know it was common for people to sleep in something like that. Its a shock to me and I am sure if you are not familiar with the culture of Tokyo Japan, its a shock to you as well!

The Score:

I am happy to give this one a 7 out of 10 for its theme in multiculturalism. The United States is not the only country on earth you know! A viewer watching this video who may not know too much about Japan will have a much better understanding of the country than they did before. I enjoyed how director Martel went around the city and threw the band into situations they did not see coming. They included Japanese Elvis impersonators, kids, riding bikes and yes even sleeping capsules! Its different and you gotta respect it!

Blink 182 – Rock Show

This video is just cool, there is no other way to put it. Who has not wanted to get a massive check like that and just go blow it on random shenanigans? If there was ever one band to do it you know its going to be skate punk band Blink – 182. The video was directed by Emmett Malloy and Brendan Malloy also known as The Malloys, who have directed many popular music videos in the previous years.

Everything is just so ridiculous:

  • distributing money to people around the town (some street workers, placing under window wipers, throwing it off the roof of a record store)
  • giving a homeless man a hair cut and new suit and taking him to a strip club
  • paying for people to shave their heads in Mullan & Bailey Hair Salon
  • purchasing some doves and releasing them
  • paying for a group of strippers to mow a man’s lawn, and clean a car
  • purchasing some cars and destroying them (specifically dropping a car from a crane)
  • buying a TV just to destroy it with a baseball bat
  • paying for a plane to carry a banner with the text: “Take off your pants and jacket”
  • giving away skateboarding gear to young skaters, some of which then try to jump over the band’s van. Professional skateboarder Jeremy Klein makes a cameo appearance.

Does this even make sense?

Yes! Why this video is great is because it fits perfectly with the band name. Its Blink 182! This band has a reputation for being all out crazy, all the time. This video proves exactly that. It gives its audience exactly what they want and how they want it.

The Score

I am giving this one a 7.8 out of 10. This video flows perfect in all angles from a great music video stand point and from an audience expectation point. They feature their reputation from the skate boards being given out to the youth, the crazy concert with mooshing fans, crazy stunts I do not even need to mention and lastly good music. This is a blink 182 music video by definition. Great job!

Gorillaz – Stylo

The one of a kind animation alternative band, the Gorilaz have done it yet again with another signature music video to add to their collection. This video shows a high speed car chase that is loaded with action. The song Stylo fits nicely with the plot of the music video. This music video was directed by Passion Pictures animation company. The video was also co-directed by Pete Candeland.

What I enjoy most about this video:

  1. Holy crap was that Bruce Willis? I could not believe when I saw this video for the first time, Bruce Willis would take on a small music video project like this which makes him and the Gorillaz look two words, bad ass! The scene that is just vintage Willis. When you see him for the first time its just on. He takes off his sun glasses, tosses his gum out the window like only someone like him could, looks straight into the camera, shakes his head and then kicks it into high gear. You know when Willis does a move like that something is about to go down. It’s fact!
  2. The directors were not afraid to allow the car engines to consistently roar. Natural sound like that adds a dimension to the video. By actually hearing the power these beautiful machines are putting out it’s easy for the audience to feel they are in the passenger seat. Great job!
  3. I gotta say it, I love how the overly sized highway cop was eating donuts on the side of the road. Then after watching the Gorillaz speed by. the cop attempts to do the classic spring into action cop move  by jumping over the hood of his patrol car. This cop ultimately failed miserably at it by not even clearing half of the car hood. A scene like that will always be a timeless piece of comedy. Always!
  4. Last but certainly not least, I have to mention the shot gun being pulled out. It was so unexpected and so entertaining. The shooter just lets that gun sing out and sends that highway patrol car flying. What a Skrilla move!

The Score

Overall, I am going to give this one a 8.5 out of 10. This video is great fun to watch. If you are in need of a laugh or want to be entertained, this is the music video for you.

Take care guys!

OK Go – This Too Shall Pass

BRAVO

It just needs to be said, the band OK Go is on their own level when it comes to music videos. They have a way of capturing an audience and having them watch until its finally over. You don’t even have to like their music to enjoy the band’s videos! Their initiative to expose music video goers to a new way of creating videos is just great to see. Since the bands first music video hit, titled, Here It Goes Again, OK Go continues to leave their audience in awe.

The Visionaries

OK Go works a lot with director James Frost. Frost has proven he has a true passion for making music videos and loves the challenges the band OK Go throws at him each time they are due for a music video. Before this music video was filmed, OK Go’s vision for their next video they wanted “a giant machine that we could dance with” said the band. Frost then contacted the California Institute of Technology. Together, the institute’s students and Frost worked together to invent the 700 household objects, estimated half-mile Rube Goldberg Machine course.

Fun Facts:

The design of this Goldberg built machine was to match the machines movement and the song together. It took the team of 30 institute students, director Frost and the band, two days to get it right. The first day the team went through 47 tries, which all failed. On the second day, it only took them 13 tries to have a successful run. The overall cost of the video was 90,000 dollars. Many takes only lasted thirty seconds. They had to build a L.A. studio just to film this project.

The Score

Oh you know its a 10 out of 10. I have never seen a music video like that. It’s fun to watch cause you have no idea whats coming next. These words come to mind when I think of this video: teamwork, technology and dedication. Enough said. See ya next time whooper snappers!

DJ Earworm – United State of Pop 2009

Whammy that was Kewl

What a collaboration of music and music video clips for 2009. Its beautiful! Anyway you see it, this is a piece of amazing DJ work from someone who truly loves what he does. How can anyone even think of a way to put all that music together and then make it all mesh nicely. Its like a movie. Right? I mean there is all kinds of stuff going on from numerous famous artists.

I believe the creators idea going into making of this song was to make one song that had the top 25 selling artists of 2009. I for one hope he keeps this up and has another one coming up for 2010 music. Wouldn’t that be sick?

Whose this guy?

This is DJ Earworm, the creator of the song and ultimately the music video. Check his site out!

Weezer – Island in the sun

The Weezer Island in the Sun music video was directed by Marcos Siega. It features the alternative rock band at a Mexican couples wedding reception. This music video is unique because  its shows the band  stepping out of their rebel repututation and taking on admirable role. An other worth mentioning music video directed by Marcos Siega was Blink 182 All the small things.

Set’s the stage

Marco Siega did a spot on  job creating a mood in the video of pure happiness. The music video has a setting of family embracing, dancing and loving one another. Which in the end makes you feel warm inside and definitly entertained.

The peaks

1. There is not one sad face in that music video. You cannot watch this music video and not be in a better mood than you were before you started watching. It just makes you feel good inside.

2. I am infatuated with how Siega filmed the band in the middle of the dance floor seperatly. By breaking the band apart and not having them perform as one it gave the wedding reception party more of a relaxed ease that fit perfect with the song. Also the camera pans inthe dance floor shots brings out the motive of the video straight to the audiance.

3.  The start and end of this video are superb. In the opening shots you see the bride getting dressed preparing for the wedding with help from her brides maids.  Cause thats what the day is all about the bride. Then the middle you see the reception where the majority of the music video takes place. Finally at the end you see the white limozine driving away decorated with just married ordiments and children chasing the car into the sun set. Well done!

This music video is getting a 9 out of 10 score. Here is why, you have to examine what message this music video leaves you with in the end. After I watch this music video I can’t help to have the earge to call anyone who I am related to and just have a conversation about anything. It makes you reminise about your family and think about when is the next time your whole family is going to see eachother again. Siega really did a wonderful job with this video.
